New York subway and buses
Fast and safe, the New York subway will get you easily to your destination if you follow these tips:
- Before you go down into the station, find out if you are going north (uptown) or south (downtown) in Manhattan.
- Free maps are available at the station kiosks as well as a wifi network – TransitWirelessWiFi.
- The EXPRESS trains stop at certain stations only and are marked by a white dot on the map,
- The LOCAL trains stop at all stations. Those indicated by a black dot are the only ones they stop at. LOCAL and EXPRESS trains stop at stations with a white dot.
- Buy a Metro Card for one dollar and charge it with the amount of your choice (min. $5). Each trip will then cost $2.75 instead of $3 for a one-way ticket.
- A $31 card gives you 7 days of unlimited travel.
New York taxi
Essential for getting around the city!
- Taxis are yellow in Manhattan (from the southern tip to Harlem in the north) and they’re green in the following neighbourhoods – Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island.
- To hail a taxi, stand at the curb and raise your arm. It’ll stop if the middle light on the roof is on, indicating it’s free.
- It’s usual to tip the driver about 10% of the fare.
- Payment can be made in cash or by credit card.
- Uber and Lyft apps are used a lot and are often cheaper than taking a taxi. If you want to subscribe, enter the codes eliseg30 for Uber and ELISE198524 for Lyft and you’ll get $5 in credit.
New York ferry

- Same fare as the subway: $2.75.
- Buy your tickets in advance by downloading the official app for the NYC Ferry. Ticket machines are also available on the platforms to purchase tickets by card or cash.
